clerestory = An upper zone of wall pierced with windows that admit light to the center of a lofty room. triforium = A shallow passage above the arches of the nave below the clerestory. pier arch = An arch resting on piers, esp. one along a nave arcade, below the triforium.

column = A cylindrical support con- sisting of a base (except in Greek Doric), shaft and capital; either mono- lithic or built up of drums the full di- ameter of the shaft to sup- port a load.
