Dictionary of Moisture Protection & Restoration

Crack Repairs Repair of a complete or incomplete separation within a single element or between contiguous elements of constructions. Cracks in stones or masonry units are very dangerous and not easily repaired as they affect the structural integrity and the watertightness of the unit. To restore the structural integrity it may be necessary to inject epoxies or install pins. The restoration of the watertightness is done with sealant installation or pointing and matching the color and texture. Dutchman A piece of similar material used to replace a damaged or missing portion of a natural stone or masonry unit. The cut is made to fit exactly the shape and size of the Dutchman allowing the smallest possible void for the installation of the mortar or epoxy. A successful Dutchman should be structurally sound and blend with the repaired unit. Unit Replacement Substitution of a damaged unit with a new unit of the same composition and detail.
